Step 7 in How to Vermicompost
How to Add Worms to the Vermicompost Bins
Now that your bin is ready, there's worm food decomposing in the bin, and the worms have arrived, what do you do?
Don't delay in getting them into the vermicompost bin. The worms have been traveling for days, and are anxious to settle in. Worms can normally live in the shipping box for a couple of days, but it is not advisable. Worms will continue losing weight until fed, and their health can suffer. After a day or two in their new home your worms will relax and begin eating, growing and producing worm castings.
Note: It is important to transfer the worms to their new bin as soon as possible.
To add the worms to your vermicomposting bin:
1. Gently remove the worms from the box.
2. Gently spread the worms on top of the moist bedding in the prepared vermicomposting bin.
3. After a few minutes, they will start to burrow down into the bedding.
4. Place the lid (or moistened burlap sack) on the container.
Note: Keep the worms out of direct sunlight.
